Whilst it requires more research our monthly price report includes both comparison sites where they handle the switching process for you and energy supplier websites where you have to switch through them yourself. How we compare suppliers
The list of utilities are gathered from data supplied by Energy Helpline for pricing and Trustpilot for the customer feedback score. The suppliers are in price order with the cheapest monthly price shown first with exceptional customer ratings highlighted in green and unusually poor ratings in red.
We use tariff data from Energy Helpline because they have the largest database of rates from all of the suppliers which is why we rated them as our favourite energy comparison site as they have consistently shown the broadest range of suppliers and the lowest price deals.
For customer feedback we've used data from Trustpilot. For comparing customer service they have the most reliable system due to the sheer volume of customer feedback ratings. Whilst third party feedback sites are useful they are not infallible, however they are the best tool currently available.
Additionally I'd recommend researching supplier websites to get a feel for the company. Do however take claims made on company websites with a pinch of salt. I've reported in the past how some of the claims some providers have made simply aren't true or at best the information is outdated and therefore misleading.
How price quote are calculated
We regularly update the list to reflect the changes in tariff prices and feedback ratings. The prices are calculated for the average UK household on a dual fuel tariff using Ofgem usage figures of 12,000 kWh gas and 2,900 kWh electric annually.
To get a monthly quote that reflects the average gas and electric bill in the UK we use Ofgems usage figures. The price you see is what the average household would be charged. If you use less or more than the average then your more accurate quote would reflect this when you do an energy comparison based on your annual energy usage based on the figures from a recent utility bill.
How this supplier comparison will help you
I put this list together as a result of several conversations with people who just didn't know which provider to switch to or in some cases how to go about switching. People believe it is too complicated to figure out where to get a cheaper rate, they think they are already getting a good deal (because their supplier told them so!) or they don't believe another utility company will be any better or offer a better price.
Most people have never heard of many of the smaller energy suppliers and many do not even know they exist. Many of these smaller companies have been around for years and many have hundreds of thousands of customers because they offer lower prices with good customer service.
Energy comparison sites are a great way of discovering existing providers offering better value. By doing our comparison of energy suppliers it will give you a better idea of which ones offer a genuine service.
Best energy suppliers for service who are good for customers
If you spend long enough following gas and electricity prices and UK suppliers then over time you build up a picture. You can see who is genuinely offering a good service and are not in the business of ripping off customers.
One of the problems many of the smaller firms have had is that they have offered deals too cheaply in order to gain long term customers but then went bust because they were not robust enough. Some suppliers have dropped the ball on customer service and have had no real long term plan that they have stuck to and instead hastily made changes affecting customers.
Based on past performance I can say that Bulb, Octopus and Green all operate on a simple ethical premise of being a good energy supplier offering fair consistent pricing, good customer support and offering renewable energy.
Of these three suppliers both Green and Octopus Energy tend to offer slightly cheaper rates. I'd also mention that Green is serious about making a difference with regards to climate change and have only ever sold clean electricity and also offer carbon offset gas making them one of the UK's best green energy suppliers.
