Warm Home Discount
The Warm Home Discount scheme is a one off £140 discount on your energy bill so you do not get the money directly it's more like a credit added to your bill.
This is nothing to do with the Cold Weather Payment or the Winter Fuel Payment which are separate schemes, if you get the winter Warm Home Discount you can still qualify for the other types of payment.
It is a government scheme aimed to help those struggling to pay their energy bills, however you have to meet certain criteria in order to get the discount.
Warm Home Discount Eligibility
The main focus of the scheme is towards pensioners on low incomes so the core group of people eligible for this discount have to be on pension credit and be getting the guarantee credit element.
You should get the discount automatically if you get the guarantee credit element or pension credit and you or your partners name is on the energy bill.
You will get a letter confirming that you qualify for the scheme automatically get the discount applied to your bill later in the winter or early spring.
There is no Warm Home discount application as such as you should automatically qualify if you meet the criteria.
Compare and switch can save you more
Whilst the £140 can help with your winter bills most people can save twice as much (around £300) by switching as there are much better energy deals on the market. Energy prices vary greatly across the energy market with the difference in annual average gas and electric bill between the best and worst ranging from £600 to £700. Take a look at our data here.
An easy way to see if you are being overcharged by your energy company is by doing a quick energy price comparison. You can do a free check at Energy Helpline which takes less than 5 minutes to find out how much you can save.
If your supplier has a cheaper deal you might be able to switch to the new tariff without losing your warm home discount. Find out switching tariff with the same supplier.
Is my Energy Supplier part of the Scheme?
Even if you meet the criteria your energy supplier needs to be part of the scheme. If you are with one of the larger suppliers they will be part of the scheme. There is a list below showing which energy companies are part of this scheme.
It is unfortunate and I believe unfair that the discount is dictated based on who your energy supplier is. Many people on low incomes have switched to cheaper tariffs offered by the smaller suppliers in order to reduce their bills and are now being unfairly punished just because they did as the government suggested and tried to save money by switching.
Low Income Broader Group Criteria
You may also qualify for a discount on your gas and electricity if you are on a low income and currently receive certain mean tested benefits then it is worth contacting your supplier and asking if you can apply.
Your eligibility will depend on the criteria set by your own electricity supplier rather than this being a fuel discount that you automatically receive. The number of discounts available may be limited so you need to apply sooner rather than later.
Also you need to be aware that you will need to remain with your current supplier until the discount is applied otherwise you will forfeit it. You are free to switch to another supplier if you find a cheaper deal after.
